Over time we have developed best practices on how medical management professionals can work most effectively with their Recruiter to achieve not only a successful job placement, but also an efficient and rewarding experience for all. In a recently published paper entitled “Working with Medical Management Recruiters” we outlined the top five best practices most critical to a healthy Candidate-Recruiter relationship. Below we expand on the second item addressed, “Be open and receptive to Constructive Criticism and Advice.” Download the full white paper to read more about these 5 key ingredients to successfully working with a specialized Recruiter.
Remember your Recruiter’s job is to ensure that you are avoiding possible pitfalls that may remove you from consideration for the positions you targeted. They will give you tips on how to enhance the formatting and content of your resume. Additionally, good Recruiters will have already gathered a wealth of information that they have learned about their clients, in terms of a hiring manager’s preferences and unique approach to candidate selection. Often the Recruiter has had numerous candidates interview with that employer, and possibly with that same hiring manager. Your Recruiter can give you insights and tips that certainly would not be available if you approached the company on your own or through internet job ads. Your Recruiter wants to secure your next career opportunity, where you will be most happy, as much as you do. While your skills are in doing the specific medical management healthcare job, our skills are in finding and securing for you that next great opportunity, so tap into that experience and knowledge that your Recruiter is bringing to the partnership.
Once in a while we get resistance from candidates about changing a resume or even taking time to have the short conversation before an interview about some of the successful strategies that may help a candidate secure their next opportunity. We have found that candidates who are “know-it-alls” and decline our brief interview preparation conversation are the ones that usually perform poorly at their interview. At times, the opposition to our advice is an indicator of potential lack of receptiveness to a company’s processes, which could spell serious trouble for all parties if they were hired and unwilling or unable to conform to a new way of doing things. In some extreme cases, we have even stopped the interview and consideration process when the candidate’s attitude clearly foreshadows these difficulties. We want all our candidates to be successful and happy at their new company, hopefully working there for many years to come.
Whether you are at the staff level as a Nurse Case Manager, a Utilization Review Specialist, or a Quality Improvement nurse, or a senior leader like the Vice President of Healthcare Services or Medical Director, the candidates who do best are those that are open to advice and feedback. I often hear seasoned professionals that say things like: “your interview tip sheet was very helpful! I hadn’t thought about finishing with a confidence statement so that the employer clearly knows where I stand on the job” or “there are some great sample questions you provided and I am going to use the one where…”.
Medical Management professionals with good longevity in their work history may only interview 10 or 15 times in their entire 30 year career, many times with 5 or 10 years between interviews. You are not supposed to be a professional interviewer, so it is always wise to review interviewing tips and strategies beforehand. Our preparatory calls before an interview are 20-30 minute conversations that really are the distilled compilation of more than 25 years of different recruiters’ experiences and lessons learned from literally 1000’s of interviews we have coordinated. When you are looking to secure that next great opportunity in Medical Management, make sure you take it seriously and heed the advice and feedback from your CareNational recruiting professional
